I get that Peter Kay is not funny but he's popularly conceived as being so (like Dane Cook or SNL over here). What I don't get is the garlic bread joke. I get that it's lame and not funny, but not what the point of the joke is. Can someone please help an American out and explain?

It isn't really a joke as far as I can tell, he's literally just saying his dad thinks it's a strange combination, that's what he thinks qualifies as a joke I guess. Idiots just laughed at it because they laugh at every single thing he says and it's become a catchphrase of his.

Like bread made of garlic or cake made of cheese? It's like Dane Cook saying he wants to be "that guy at a party carrying a ladder. Ya know like 'Hey who needs a ladder!?' Hahahaha!"

Could well be, Peter Kay plays up to ridiculous and amazingly dull stereotypes of the North, one being that we are so stuck in our ways that any introduction of variety in things like food is amazing to any Northerner, so the combination of bread and garlic is terrifying, that's how I took it. The only exposure I've had to Dane Cook is through that fucking hideous 'Good Luck Chuck' film, that joke sounds bloody brilliant though and I will definately not be catching the next flight out to Merica to teach him a good old fashioned lesson, Hostel style, promise.

See, when I first heard "garlic bread" I was amused simply for the fact that my own dad actually did the exact same thing when I ordered garlic bread in a restaurant once. My dad's not northern though, so I take the joke as one aimed at the older generation not "getting" new things. Pretty simple, but it had a personal resonance to me.
I find P&G's mockery of Peter Kay pretty hilarious, but I also think he comes in for some unfair stick just because he's popular. The English have a habit of building people up, just to knock them down. We fall in love with someone, over-expose them, and then get sick of them and start blaming it on them as if it's their fault we saturated ourselves so much. He's not the world's best comedian at all, and some of the shit he gets is deserved, but I think much of his criticism comes from the "He's successful so I hate him" crowd.Posted 1 week ago # -
^ That's a bit of a generalisation though, not all of us loved him at first, I always found him extremely unfunny and just rather offensive quite a bit of the time. He does still have legions of fans out there who will defend him to a tee, I think the majority of people who did like him and then turned on him were just jumping on a bandwagon and managed to delude themselves into thinking he actually was good but now it's out that he's a complete pile of shit they've realised the truth. It's not just his success people hate him for.
Oh and no problem Dylan, it was fun to take his comedy apart to realise that it's actually even more shit than it initially appears.

Dane Cook, on the other hand, has always been shit.

Who is Dane Cook?

For the record, I consider most of our fun poking at Mr Kay to be just that. I would even go so far as to say it was almost affectionate. Couple of little sly digs in there but for the most part the joke is clearly, once again, me and Ed not getting it.
Naturally there is some resentment in there, and maybe even a touch of jealousy, hopefully that comes across as being "in character", but in real life from a comedian point of view, this is because it is frustrating to see something so simple and broad do well. Not saying we are ground-breaking in any sense of the word, but there is certainly a commitment to having a bit of originality, a bit of edge, and a retarded malevolence.I'd also say I - from time to time - find the depiction of folk from the north-west rather insulting. That said, the fact that so many of them churn out cash to go see him every time he puts a ticket on sale, may mean I'm in a minority or that they are as fucking thick as he portrays them or hopefully - for me - both.Like Mcintyre though, I can't knock the guy as a performer (although I'd consider his onstage persona far more likeable that Michael). I think Live from the Top of the Tower is a brilliant performance, and I really enjoyed That Peter Kay Thing. Never cared for Phoenix Nights, ditto Max and Paddy, and that awful X Factor thing.Plenty of alleged offstage stories about him that would raise an eyebrow, but there are plenty about me too. In all, don't be fooled into thinking the comedy community is a nurturing environment, plenty of feet on necks and bruises on shins.Posted 1 week ago # -
Ah, one YouTube search later and I now am sadly aware of who Dane Cook is. Oh dear. Oh deary dear.
