Oh what...more bloody lists.

I went to see Muppets Christmas Carol when it first came out at the cinema but a combination of dating a sex mad 18 year old and a long day of Christmas shopping meant I fell asleep very early on into it. If memory serves that was Christmas Eve 1991 (or might have been 1992) and I only recently watched it all the way through. Loved it mostly.Best films off top of my head (no order & no posey clever ones):The Empire Strikes BackGhostbustersBrassed OffBlair Witch ProjectRaiders Of The Lost ArkRocky Horror Picture ShowClerks 2Blues BrothersPee Wee's Big AdventureLaurel & Hardy: Sons Of The DesertBest Albums (no order, no best-ofs):Hup - The Wonder StuffMiaow - The Beautiful SouthThe People Who Grinned Themselves To Death - The HousemartinsGordon - Barenaked LadiesBat Out Of Hell - Meat LoafTurnstiles - Billy JoelThe Muppet Show Album (1&2)69 Love Songs - The Magnetic FieldsTake A Break - Me First And The Gimme GimmesSail Away - Randy NewmanPosted 6 months ago #

I could spend time debating the merits of the above lists (Clerks 2 better than Clerks or Dogma?), but that's for another time...
However, one genuine question - I've been watching comedy for years now, and i'm constantly amazed about how people suddenly become the 'new big thing' - John Bishop for example... A year ago, no-one outside of the circuit had heard of him, and now he's bloody well everywhere, and gets to fondle the fit one of Sky Sports News a lot on that James Corden thing.... Same goes for Paddy McGuinness, Lee Mack and Michael McIntyre - these guys aren't exactly 20yr old newcomers, yet they seem to appear from nowhere.
How does it work then? Is it all pure luck & hard work, or is it more about the management companies and what sort of comedy is considered fashionable at the time?

Think if we knew that we would even run our own website?
Bish has been on the circuit a long, long time. Ditto Lee Mack. Lee in particular works very, very hard. I don't think Lee is a good example of suddenly being the new big thing, as he his star has risen slowly, for want of any other phrase. Michael has been around a few years, works hard too.Paddy I have no idea about. I can only assume he, or somebody close to him, knows where the bodies are buried. No idea how the jump happens, who decides it etc, there aren't many people consistently on tv/selling out big venues that don't work very hard and deserve the reward though. There are of course some exceptions. And Clerks 2 is Smith's best movie by a long shot. Then Dogma.Posted 6 months ago # -
Paddy McGuinness was just from Phoenix Nights an that weren't it?
Did he even do stand up before then?I assume he got Peter's management from that and that fucking god awful spin off they did and he was away.I dunno how comedy works, I've a mate who had two good runs at Edinburgh, was kind of championed by Bob Odenkirk at Just For Laughs and had a podcast that had David Cross on as a guest and whatnot. Was like two years ago, still doing five minute open spots around Newcastle. He's got right floppy student hair as well, can't believe he wasn't on bbc3 like a shot.Posted 6 months ago # -
I'd just like to concur with Clerks 2 being Sir Smith's best film by far.
Posted 6 months ago # -
Concur on Clerks 2 also. Huge Smith Fan and think Clerks 2 is his most rounded film to date. Probably helps that we are of a similar age and the observations made in both Clerks flicks have an element of resonance with me.
Just read that back and I think I may have just become Mark Lawson.

Is it ever a bit weird that Ray has more followers than Ed on twitter?
I think that is what will eventually destroy the podcast.Twitter war.Posted 6 months ago # -
Dunebug - we've all been in situations where we have been the next big thing but it's not happened, I'm sure he will be fine if he has deffo kept the floppy hair. Maybe try E4?
Also on the subject of Twitter, Ed has loads more followers on facebook so it evens itself out. The boring reason has nothing to do with actual popularity, Ed launched his facebook the week before his appearance on Russ' show, I launched mine a month after my appearance. I have more twitter things because of one tweet about Ann Widicombe that got retweeted a lot and neither of us care how many followers we have. My best thing is when I see people say "Can't believe I lost ten followers today over etc etc" - I wouldn't have the first fucking clue if I had lost a hundred followers - none of these numbers ever add up in reality. If they did we wouldn't have to keep reminding people about our live shows...Posted 6 months ago # -
Have either of you seen Let the Blood Run Free?Posted 6 months ago #

nope - what is that one?
Posted 6 months ago # -
I will explain in the form of a dvd, i suspect you might thoroughly enjoy it.
Posted 6 months ago # -
I think the joys of Tim Curry and Billy Connolly in Muppet Treasure Island outweigh the squealing horror that is Kevin Bishop (and you can enjoy the fact that the role must surely have got him horribly bullied in school later).
The only question I can think of is 'Does Ed realise he has a sexy impersonator?': http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgvXTXi4xXoPosted 6 months ago # -

I believe this is what's known as "off topic"
Posted 6 months ago # -
How is that an Ed impersonator? Not having a go, I just don't see it, will start a new topic to discuss that though.
To drag this topic back to the relevant area of obsession with Ray's best things, do you have a favourite out of all The Comic Strip episodes Ray?
Posted 6 months ago # -
Rather predictably I shall go for "Mr Jolly Lives Next Door", closely followed by "More Bad News".

whats your favourite muppet Ray?
Posted 6 months ago # -
I am going to guess Fozzy - am I right or not Ray? Incase anyone is interested, my favourite one is whatever Ray says his one is.
EdPosted 6 months ago # -
(Ed it is spelt "Fozzie"...)
I will go with a tie between Fozzie and Rowlf, but honorary mentions go to Sam Eagle, Animal and the Swedish Chef. And from the newer Muppets I can watch Bobo all day long. One of the funniest ever Muppet moments was on "Muppets Tonight" when Rizzo is on a walkie-talkie to an earpiece in Bobo's ear as Bobo is on a date with Cindy Crawford. Rizzo is telling him what to say. Two of Rizzo's nephews come in the room with balloons. Rizzo says "Hey thats a nice set of balloons you got there, maybe you'd let me play with them later?". It then cuts back to Cindy Crawford punching Bobo.Posted 6 months ago # -
Question for Ray, you mentioned in a recent episode that you quote The young ones and Bottom. What is your favorite episode of each of them.Mine are,The young ones = BombBottom = 'S OutAlso, why can't i post on this forum from an iPad?Posted 6 months ago # -
Hey man
I have no idea about the reluctance of iphone and ipad to post on here. What I tend to do is type out responses on "notes" and then C&P which does work. It is a pain in the arse I am aware...My answer to your question would be:Young Ones - OilBottom - s'upI think s'up is the best single episode of any sitcom because of it's isolation and the fact it is essentially a Beckett duologue.Posted 6 months ago # -
Both great episodes, although I probably would have said that no matter what your response was. Those are two sitcoms I can watch over and over without getting sick of them. Thanks for the C&P tip.Posted 6 months ago #

Seeing as it's somewhat Muppets-related, I've been wondering if you've seen/are a fan of the TV show Dinosaurs, Ray?
I just recently started rewatching the show for the first time since I was a kid, and I'm blown away by how topical and edifying it is, when I just remember it being a wacky show about talking dinosaurs.

Yep know it well. Just wait till you get to the final episode...

I am new on here and dead excited that I can ask P&G (well, P) a question that they (he) might actually answer.
Hello Ray, in this week's episode you say that your warm up film is going to be on the BBC site - when and where will this be?
Oh and thank you for the many, many hours (it could be any number in maths) of podcast joy.

Welcome.
Not sure when it is out but it was cleared yesterday (there were some issues about who 'owned' it - all very dull and boring and it turned out it was me as I wrote it which I knew anyway) so it should be shortly. Me and the other one have also recorded a commentary that will be released as a one-off podcast when the film finally comes out.Posted 5 months ago # -
Right well hello awomanone. I am here to answer your question now just to prove you wrong. So here goes. The answer is what Ray said.

Ed what is your best cheese?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Right, you have a two buttons, a red and a blue one. If you press the red, everything star warsy gets wiped from the face of the earth. If you press the blue one everything muppetsy gets wiped from the face of the earth. If you refuse then your mum and Ed's mum (slag) will be eaten up by a monster and it'll be all your fault. Which one Ray?
Posted 5 months ago # -
Oh the poor mums.
