In regards to all this legal stuff and decency and all these hot topical things at the moment, when you do the live shows (tickets bought), do you just have to be EXTRA careful what you say, or do the laws not apply in the same way that they would on a recorded podcast? Because obviously you sometimes say things that you are advised not to broadcast on the internet, and you are able to take them out and nip it in the bud. But at a live show this process can't happen, so do the laws not apply? Or do you just have to try harder and firmly bite your tongues?
Thanks!

Hi, I've three questions, the two latter ones are X-mas related.
1. Was EAB intended to be a parody of the Karl Pilkington approach, or was it just a straightforward rip-off?
2. What would be the "Ray says a food" recommendation for X-mas Dinner? Or a drink...
3. Depression: What is the Stephen Fry Depression exactly? Is it normal Depression or is it bipolar disorder, which as I heard is more common among creative people. And some of Rays behaviour, as Ed often decribes it in the podcast, seems to fit the definition of "manic". So no wonder the SSRI-drug didn't help, he should've tried something like Lithium instead. (But honestly, I came to believe that there are no easy solutions and that the psycho-drugs aren't advanced enough yet. I was once on an SSRI-drug for five weeks and all it did was giving me nervous shivers, diarrhoea and sleep disorder. So if you are constipated and don't like sleep anyway, this is my recommendation for X-mas dinner.)Posted 9 months ago # -
UntamedBabe - the legal issue was with stuff that was written on the forums, that we were advised to remove. Not a case of censorship or freedom of speech or anything - just boils down to the fact that WE are legally responsible for what is on here, and whilst we are more often than not prepared to throw caution to the wind in what WE say, it would be very different us getting shit because of what other people say.
As far as the live shows are concerned, or indeed any live/recorded performance, we have only ever been self-regulating. Chortle have never asked us to remove anything, nor has there been any meaningful legal repercussion, so with that that in mind I think live stuff shall remain unaffected.Posted 9 months ago # -
Untamed - just re-read your post and think you were mainly talking about all the shit with Frankie that's going on as opposed to the legal stuff on here the other day.
In answer to that, the stuff that is ridiculously ongoing with Frankie has no bearing on whether or not we will misbehave. So no, we don't feel the need to be more careful or anything. And nor will Frankie. And nor should anyone.Posted 9 months ago # -
Chris;
1. You're going to have to explain that to me in more detail because I can't see any comparison at all.2. Pigs in blankets.3. The phrase Stephen Fry Depression comes from a brilliant documentary Stephen made called The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive. Manic depression is now called bipolar. So we can assume SFD=bipolar.Posted 9 months ago # -
Thanks a lot for your reply, Ray.
Re my 1st question: By Karl Pilkington approach I mean this: the "idiot" researches some freakish "facts" on the internet, tells us about them and then says something like "isn't that amazing!" or "weird innit?". Then there is the voice of reason who says something like "that's mental, I'm not even gonna listen to this anymore!" or "Karl, this is bollocks! Not only am I a brillant comedian but I am also a certified scientist and philosopher and pretty much the authority on everything and as such I can assure you that there is no such thing as a monkey who runs a laundry on the moon! Now shut up and play a record you round headed manc twat!". - See what I mean?

...and just to make this clear: I liked EAB and EAD a lot, because anyway it gives a nice fresh Ray and Ed flavour to the whole routine.
Just what I wanted to know is wether this was consciously to be a parody or just unconsciously...erm...along the same lines.Posted 9 months ago # -
Thanks Ray!
And Chris, I don't think Karl and Ricky were the first people to have the stupid/clever dynamic. It's probably the most widely used set up in comedy. But I do see your point with the disibility element. I would say that with Ed and Ray it's more like a sketch than a genuine argument, like Ricky and Karl appear to have. Thinking about it, the older podcasts had more of a resemblence, with Raji playing the Karl role, and Ed playing Steve.. or maybe that doesn't work.
Anyway, you have a point with the whole freak thing, but that's probably just a coincidence. It's just.. comedy from friction I guess. Same with Collings and Herrin. And probably many others. They all have it, just Ray and Ed happened to have stumbled upon a similar topic.
End.Posted 9 months ago # -
Fair enough, UntamedBabe, seems like you've got me there. But here's another one for you: Did you know, that Ricky has started doing impressionist paintings now, while on the other hand Ray hasn't even come near his impressionist phase yet! Ey Ray, you better hurry up now, before he starts making sculptures out of raclette cheese and makes you look like a complete fool!

Just realised I never replied to this but luckily I think Untamed pretty much did it for me.
There is an odd solidarity amongst Gervais fans which every now and then tips over to sycophancy and Ricky is credited with inventing everything, when he in actual fact is just another person to have done it, albeit very well. Not a criticism of Gervais or indeed Chris (not saying this is what you are doing), but it can get tiresome as a comic to be told "that's like Ricky Gervais". Anyone who thinks themselves original has no sense of history etc etcEAB was definitely not inspired or derivative of Ricky and Karl's stuff, and as Untamed said, the fundamental difference is Ed clearly knows he is talking shit, and - if you could see him you would understand - the smirk is the main thing that "annoys" me in those sections. I don't think they even come across as us playing it as a genuine argument, they're very knowing I think. We were compared very little to Gervais' shows with the old podcast and, to echo what Chris said, I think we would have understood that more (despite the fact that, again, it wasn't an influence in anything more than it was a podcast - my relationship with Raji has pretty much always been an abusive one from the first day he heckled me on stage). There is certainly a crossover between our respective podcasts and I don't think that would have happened if we had simply ripped them off.Weirdly, my old BigAndDaft BBC London radio show was on the air in the same time slot as Ricky & Steve on XFM, so we have been broadcasting for the same time period. We don't need to pick a winner or say either has done better than the other or try to work out who has made the most money or been the most successful with the biggest fan base, let's just all get along for goodness sake...Posted 9 months ago # -
Were you upset when Raji was eliminated from Strictly Come Dancing in the sixth round this year?
Posted 9 months ago # -
Everything about Raji upsets me.

Ray, what is your best one of Muppets? I think mine is Grover.
Posted 9 months ago # -
Even though Grover is technically a Muppet, he is not from the Muppet Show. I am very fond of him also.
However, Fozzie wins, then Rowlf, then Animal, then Sam The Eagle and then it is a relatively open race.I don't like Rizzo or Pepe.Posted 9 months ago # -
Favourite crisp flavour?

Do you like having fans or not?
Are you happy with the kind of fans you attract?Aaaaaand, do you like having people fire questions at you and then wait patiently for you to respond, or is it still a little bit weird?AND - bonus fourth question inspired by Untamed in the other thingybob - what's it like having people actually mimic you a bit? Do you like it when people say "busters" or "woman one," or do you feel like they're muscling in in your act a little?Posted 9 months ago # -
Is it both just the PS3's you both have or do you have any of the older consoles? Also is the PS3 backwards compatible to PS2 games by any chance?
Posted 9 months ago # -
FrasersGhost - that is really difficult. I think prawn cocktail or worcester sauce. Worcester sauce may edge it.
robwebster:1. Better than not.2. I don't think there is a 'type'. It is easy to misjudge people on the internet I think, or for people to come across 'wrong'. I try to reserve judgement for in person. Can't recall meeting one that was objectionable. Oh no hang on - there very much was one once - but I think he was just trying to impress us in a misguided way like that bloke who shot Reagan for Jodie Foster.3. That's fine - didn't realise I hadn't responded to this one though so you have been well patient.4. No issue with that at all - as long as people don't expect us to talk that way if they meet us after gigs....Predator - We both have PS3. I tend to get rid of old consoles although I have kept my PS2 in the bedroom. I also have a psp in a drawer - will probably sell that soon. The PS3 I have is not back compatible really which I think is the absolute worst thing about them - annoys me no end.Posted 9 months ago # -
what sort of shit jobs did ray and ed do before the comedy??
Posted 9 months ago # -
Wahey! Cheers for the answers Ray. I have learned. Kinda wondering what that one objectionable fella did but I've got a feeling it's probably a little crass to ask.
Still! Tip top.Posted 9 months ago # -
Did you ever have to pay your parking fine you mentioned?
Do you and Ed try and schedule live gigs in similar areas so you can travel together?
Are you really playing two gigs in one night in Leeds on 10th Feb, or are the live dates wrong?
Posted 9 months ago # -
What comedy programmes do you watch/like on telly (or Sky+ with intention to watch)?

CTM - I worked in my Grandad's butcher shop but I wouldn't consider that a shit job, it was fun and I would do anything to just spend another hour there with him.
I worked for Wetherspoons for 2 years behind a bar (at the Tally Ho in North Finchley) which was a bit shit but I got a lot of creative stuff done and kissed some girls a bit. Then I worked in Sales for a local newspaper for a couple of years which was a bit shit but I did get a company car for some of it and often went home for a sleep in the daytime. Then I worked selling Strip Metal from an office which was a proper shit job. I lasted 3 months, rang my mum up one day for a loan (which I may not have ever paid her back) and then went home at lunch, took my phone off the hook, and vowed to never work a day job again.Took me years to make a solvent living, signed on a bit, but never regretted just going for it.I know Ed once worked in a pub for about two weeks but he is all posh.Posted 9 months ago # -
Karl_Pilkington:
Nope I did not pay the parking fine. Was never, ever going to. A massive con. You may have noticed I don't respond well to being bullied by "authority"...Me and Ed tend to do the Uni gigs together when possible but we don't deliberately book ourselves into the same gigs on the same night unless we are doing a specific show together.Yep that is two gigs on the 10th Feb - they are about a mile apart from each other and both great.Posted 9 months ago # -
Nood;
I genuinely don't watch hardly any TV, especially not the comedy stuff. I sometimes catch 2 mins of something and decide it is shit, but the stuff I tend to like is also the stuff I have been warm up for - I would watch IT Crowd and I would watch Not Going Out, but I see them being recorded anyhow. I don't like watching panel show things or stand up stuff on TV.I think Ed watches far more TV than me so ask him one day if he is ever here.Posted 9 months ago # -
Oh and FrasersGhost I have a new favourite crisp flavour: Jacket Potato and butter which I think is exclusive to Asda in one of their multipacks but it is well brilliant.
Posted 9 months ago # -
Cheers Ray, makes me feel good that Im not the only one thats done shit in my life. I do feel I have time to go for it when i can be bothered
Posted 9 months ago # -
I am simply in awe of the fact that somebody had the audacity to make potato-flavoured crisps.
Posted 9 months ago # -
I thought the same but fuck they work
Posted 9 months ago # -
That is a work of cheeky monkey genius right there, got to go find them.
When you go the cinema do you have any preference over adult films likefor all their naughty bits or kids films for their lack of cynicism and general loveliness (when they are done right) at all.
