Got to agree with you both on the Batman front there. I don't think Dark Knight held up so well to repeat viewings, namely my second. Never thought id find myself waiting for Heath Ledger to come back on screen. They could have have cut out quite a bit and made it a lot less baggy. Bale's Batman voice just became a joke, and i couldn't take him seriously once i'd started finding it irratating.

Saw "Monsters" last night I loved it, but can understand why it's dividing opinion, as it is so slow placed. Personallly I like that kind of thing. Surprised by the comparisons to "District 9", to me it was more of a cross between "Lost in Translation" and "Close Encounters". Anyone else caught it?

Yeah I saw it, really really enjoyed it, it was very well played and very unpretentious when it could have been so irritatining and up it's own arse, loved how the mosters were just inconsequential ambiance too.

I've just sat through 'The Hottie and the Nottie'. A delightful little romantic comedy in which Paris Hilton (On top, scenery chewing form) demonstrates her most gentle, caring, vulnerable side as a girl who refuses to date any man until her not so attractive friend gets a date. A funny, warm and very moving piece of filmmaking, it really is nice to see there are still great actors like Paris and great stories like this one in a time when such things are scarce.

Sounds awesome, Predator! Have added to my lovefilm list.

Thanks guys for steering me in the right direction once again. I get so many good film recommendations on this thread. I truly loved Dark Knight, mainly for Heath Ledger's maniacal performance but had never seen Batman Begins. Well I just have and can now understand all the comments. It blows DK out of the water. It is in every way a better film with a more structured narrative and some fantastic action set pieces. While DK has one outstanding character that steals the show BB is greater than the sum of its parts. Cheers guys.
BTW I can recommend "Splice", human/animal genetics gone wrong. Some bits are genuinely creepy. And "REC 2" though not as good as the first but if you enjoyed that you will still like the sequal. And A Predator - Thanks. As I say the recommedations on here are excellent so I shall be adding Paris Hiltons latest opus to my must-see list. I shall be back with an in-depth (ie drunken) analysis later.

I've just got a copy of Splice. Looking forward to it.
I've managed to find a copy of The Poughskeepsie Tapes recently. It's a mockumentary about a haul of video tapes found by police hunting for a serial killer. The tapes document the killer's 10 year reign and are interspersed with the story of the police trying to catch him. Some pretty creepy bits from what I've seen.
I've also got a copy of Gummo which I've yet to watch. Seeing as the film pretty much starts with a kid drowning a cat and me being an ardent cat-lover I'm working up to watching it.
I've got Lake Mungo on my 'to watch' list. I've been recommended a few creepy films recently and managed to snag a few of them but I'm still looking for one called Cropsey if anyone happens to know where I can find a copy then let me know.
For anyone looking for creepy/shocking stuff I can recommend looking on the paranormal board on the infamous 4chan site. There are regular postings with lists of films, websites, youtube vids and 'creepypasta' (short horror/shock stories, some of which are pretty good). Be warned though people will sometimes post dodgy stuff like gore pics and worse (although potentially illegal stuff is pretty quickly picked up and deleted by the mods and mainly turns up on the 'random' board).

I really really liked Splice, combined seriousness with tongue in cheek beautifully. Never got round to seeing '[Rec]' though I did see the American remake Quarantine which was both fucking hilarious and fucking infuriating, I couldn't get over the fact that the guy was carrying around one of those huge news cameras, how much must that camera weigh? You're being chased around by zombies, drop the fucking camera.
I hated Gummo with all my heart and soul personally, Lake Mungo and Cropsey sound interesting, will look into them and will let you know if i find the latter.
Just finally got round to watching Suspiria, thought it was absolutely beautiful if very strangely acted. Argento really knows how to exploit audience disorientation for good genuine scares.

I thought you'd like "Splice". The relationships are genuinely unsettling.
"Gummo" was one of those box ticking exercises for me. Glad I've seen it but wouldn't want to live there.
"Suspiria" is beautifully made and Goblin rock.
Everyone should watch "The Sargossa Manuscript". Or not.Posted 2 weeks ago # -
Yeah, certainly my type of film, they are indeed.
I am onto getting Sargossa Manuscript now actually, should have it by tomorrow morning to watch in the evening.
Posted 2 weeks ago # -
Yup. I thought you would like "Sargossa" A Predator. It is right up your street. Jerry Garcia's fave film and Scorceses a huge fan. Watching Hottie and the Nottie tomorrow thanks to yourself. Any personal trauma I should experience is on you. Don't try and dissuade me, it's too late.... must look....aaarrrrghhhhh...my eyes are burning.....aaarrrrrggghhhhh.......still would though...

Read a liyyle about it and can't wait to see it soon, I could never ignore the word of the man who directed King of Comedy. Oh hurrah, I do so hope you enjoy it as much as I did. I wouldn't ever try to dissuade you, no one realises just how important the film is, it's up there with Taxi Driver for sure. Really? I think she's about as attractive as a barbie doll that's been turned inside out and it has all human organs and flesh inside but it's all rotting and spewing hideous amounts of thick, rancid yellow puss all over your face and in your mouth personally.

@ Dick Pott: Unfortunately, I don't think Cropsey got a DVD release, and is currently only available from streaming services like Netflix and Hulu here in America. It is a great documentary though, and is genuinely disturbing. The creators have been doing screenings across the country and it is being well received, so hopefully it will get a bigger release.
Back on topic: I recently watched Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies, and The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia. Both are documentaries and both are quite grotesque. For those unfamiliar with these films, Hated is about the Murder junkies and their final tour; imagine every horrible internet video you have seen in the past 5 years and add some shit music and you got Hated. TWAWWOWV is about the White family, a bunch of drug addled sociopaths that fight, do drugs, and occasionally tap dance. I give them both 3 stars for some funny bits.

I am of course referring to the "nottie" Christine Lakin who even in ugly guise is infinitely more attractive than her poisonous co-star. See "Reefer Madness - The Musical".
Sheesh! Gotta watch what I post late at night, eh?
About to watch "Restrepo".
Oh and I just happened to have watched Hated this week as well. Good doc. I knew all about GG anyway and had seen some YouTube clips as well so didn't think I'd be too shocked but some of his behaviour is SO over the line. The music is awful too but an arresting film nonetheless. Haven't seen the White family doc but have seen White Lightnin'. Gonna seek it out and huff me some gas. Yeeehaw!

I watched "The Final Sacrifice" on "Mystery Science Theater 3000" last night, it's one of my favorites. If anyone likes Canadian $1,500 budget movies about tubby alcoholics named Rowsdower fighting men in tank tops in the middle of nowhere in Alberta, then check it out.

Ah Mystery Science Theatre 3000! I once spent a week downloading all 10 seasons. I love it. Cinematic Titanic and RiffTrax are good but not a patch on the original. I liked the backstory in MST3K. It added another dimension to it.

Dick Pott: I used to watch it all the time when I was a kid but now it's not on TV at all over here. I'm downloading too. I started with my old favorites and now I'm going back to the beginning. Others I absolutely love: "Overdrawn at the Memory Bank," "Space Mutiny" and "Prince of Space."

Thank you A Predator for that recommendation to watch the Hottie and the Nottie. I feel so much better now. Just remind me which circle of hell that was because I get confused sometimes between the 7th and 8th. You know how that goes. Might cleanse my soul with a bit of Ken Bigley or Bud Dwyer.
On a lighter note - Restrepo was brilliant. (not lighter really is it?).
Merry Festivus.

"Castle in the Sky" this afternoon. Miyazaki's so awesome.

Just watched the 156 minute version of 'Caligula' and it is fucking amazing (genuinely this time), a masterpiece so damaged that it transcends masterpiece itself and becomes something so much more significant, fascinating and insanely entertaining than anything I can recall seeing since Oldboy.
By the way Tim, 'Sargossa Manuscript' is on hold till I learn Polish or get video of it I can stick English subtitles on. Any ideas?

I have never seen Caligula and always wanted to because there was an advert regularly in "Video World" which was a magazine I used to buy in my teens which looked like a VHS review thing but actually had loads of busters in it.
I believe the same can be said for Caligula you dirty boy naughty now...Posted 5 days ago # -
The buster count on Caligula is through the roof, only trouble with that is have to deal with a permanent bonk on all the way through the film apart from in the bit where a guy get's his cock cut off, that kind of kills the mood a bit and lets you relax for second or too.

I recommend For All Mankind, a 1989 documentary about the Apollo space program. No busters but it's 80 minutes of awesome NASA footage and Brian Eno music. I watched it a couple of days ago and was riveted.

First saw Caligula when I was about 8 at midnight on Channel 5 when I was being a naughty boy and staying up late. Probably a contributing factor in me growing up the way I did and becoming the kind of person who enjoys the Peacock and Gamble podcast.
Not that I'm comparing either Ray or Ed to Caligula. Though saying that I think Ray would make a brilliant Roman Emperor and/or dictator.
Posted 4 days ago # -
Ha ha. You are absolutely right SamD. I think Ray would be in his element as a Roman Emperor commanding over orgies at his roman palace. If anybody out there is a dab hand with photoshop (not me) perhaps they could whip up a pic of Ray complete with gold laurel wreath and ornate toga. Ed could be perhaps a centurion. As this is starting to sound like the start of one of Ed's s** stories and Big Brother is clearly watching, I'd better stop now.

Re-watched Inception today and went to see Black Swan. Definitely more humorous than Darren Aronofsky's other films.
