Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare was brilliant. They got the balance right between absurdity and outright shit to create a film that bordered on self parody without ever being truly funny, and that is was made it hilarious.
Not to mention, Robert Englund managed to be creepier in the scenes without the makeup than he ever was as burned Freddy. That counts for something.

It was good entertainment, as every NoES film is, but I just thought the plot was just bizarre even by NoES standards and the acting was actually some of the worst I've ever seen in a major horror franchise. And again, why would you cast Roseanne and her equally unpleasant ex-husband, whatever his name is? They're genuinely cringe-worthy.
But yeah, I sort of see what you're getting at, it definitely has some good points. Seeing pre-burn Freddy was quite interesting. They were planning to make a prequel about his mass murder for ages, but it never materialised and they ended up making that awful remake instead. Got to be 1, 3 and New Nightmare for me though. Really loved 3 when I was younger, thought it was the perfect mix of surrealism while still keeping an element of real horror. Strange how the three films I like most in the series are the only three Wes Craven worked on.
Speaking of horror films, re-watched Cannibal Holocaust last night. Funny film. ;)

I don't get the whole Cannibal Holocaust thing, I would call exploitation my favourite genre but that is the most overrated film ever to come out of it. It's dull and portentous to an admittedly laughable point, the laughs don't save it from it's out and out ugliness though and the genuine animal cruelty is just fucking sickening.

I like it's ugliness. I think the fact that it was made on such a tiny budget and looks and feels so amateurish gives it a lot of charm. Also, I admire that in an era of a lot of violent films that were made just to be controversial, Deodato at least made a film with some kind of moral and gave you something to think about, even if said moral was portrayed in a slightly pretentious and idiotic way.
As for the animal cruelty, I just find it ridiculous the abuse the filmmakers got for that. They killed some animals and ate them. People do it every single day all over the world, why is it all of a sudden a problem because they filmed it? Do you really think the native tribes of South America kill their food humanely? I would agree with you completely if they had just killed the animals and left them, but they didn't. Every animal killed was eaten by the cast and crew, so it's really not an issue as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see how something so cynical and misguided can be likable, the moral given at the end of the film felt tacked on and insincere and it was actually a moral present in many films of it's kind at the time.
They didn't just kill them, they quite clearly gave them a horribly tortured death in that film. What does the way the tribes kill them have to do with anything? We're talking about the film makers, though if they do kill their food the way the film makers do it's just as deplorable.

I don't remember any of the animals being tortured. They were all just killed with a machete. The most violent animal death was the tortoise, and even that was decapitated before they did anything else to it.

Then I am misremebering that admittedly, I remember the tortoise recieving quite an extensive death with head very much on, argument is a bit fucked now I guess, bugger.

In fairness though, I can entirely see why people wouldn't like the film as a whole. It is all in all a fairly awful film in almost every way. For me though, it has more substance and character than a lot of modern exploitation films that are just pointless gorefests.
On a lighter note, I can't sleep at all so I'm watching the SpongeBob SquarePants movie, which may well be one of my favourite films of all time.

Watching A Nightmare on Elm Street 2. Yes, I know, generally regarded as the worst. However, when you add in the legendary "all the characters in it are well gay" context, it becomes brilliant. Absolutely everything in that film is transformed into comic brilliance.

Nightmare on Elm St Part II was the first film I owned. I bought it for 9.99 in WHSmiths in Blackpool on VHS. So I like it loads. Ed is always banging on about how he doesn't like it, but nothing wrong with it for mine.
Over the past few days I have been watching the Great Muppet Caper - despite being a proper fan of the Muppet Show I have never seen a Muppet film all the way through for various reasons, so I am going to watch as many of them as I can this week. Loving the Great Mupper Caper so you can have that as a recommendation.

I love Caper, but Christmas Carol and Treasure Island are actually my favourites other than the original Muppet Movie.
Hurry up and watch Muppet's Treasure Island. Tim Curry is in it, therefore it must be brilliant.

Treasure island is my favourite muppet film, I used to have a really old school PC game for it aswell!
Can't say I really like the Christmas Carol one though.
Wasn't there one in New York? Or did I make that up?

Yep, Muppets Take Manhattan, where they try and get their own Broadway musical. Quite good, but not one of my favourites.

Do think Tim Curry is ace, however the young lad in it is Kevin Bishop. I'm not watching Kevin Bishop for that long. I'll cry blood.

That is good point, even the awesomeness of the Muppets and Tim Curry together can't mute Kevin Bishop's inclusion in a film, Christmas Carol is the best one anyway.

Just bought The Shining on blu-ray. If, for some insane reason you haven't seen it, go gets it. Fucking brilliant.

Watching BluRay versions of the Back to The Future trilogy. Just fucking ace, still outclasses pretty much every new movie I've seen in the last few years.

Watched the original Dawn of the Dead last night because I love it and Halloween is sort of a month-long holiday over here. My girlfriend didn't really get it though, but that's okay, at least she's seen it now and will get the references. I have a poster of it up in my dining room.

Just watched the remake of Alfie, too long and Jude Law gave a totally unlikable performance, he is gorgeous though and has one sexy voice.
